초록

도시에서의 삶의 질은 단순히 주거와 이동의 문제를 넘어, 시민이 공유하는 공간과 그 안에서 형성되는 사회적 관계에 의해 달라질 수 있다. 특히 도시화와 개인화가 심화되는 상황에서 공공 공간은 휴식과 여가의 장소일 뿐 아니라, 시민 간 반복적 마주침과 상호작용을 가능하게 하고 공동체적 신뢰를 형성하는 사회적 기반으로 주목된다. 이러한 문제의식에 바탕을 두고, 본 연구는 공공공간이 도시민의 행복과 어떠한 관계를 갖는지 실증적으로 검토하고, 그 과정에서 신뢰가 수행하는 매개적 역할을 분석하였다. 이를 위해 공공공간은 서울특별시의 ‘인구 1인당 공원 면적’, ‘인구 1인당 도서관 면적’, ‘인구 1인당 체육시설 면적’으로 측정하였으며, 신뢰와 행복은 서울서베이(2017) 자료를 활용하여 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 공공공간 변수 가운데 인구 1인당 공원 면적은 도시민의 행복과 유의미한 정의 관계를 보였으며, 신뢰의 부분 매개효과 역시 인구 1인당 공원 면적에서만 확인되었다. 이는 보행, 휴식, 여가활동 등 다양한 일상적 활동이 비교적 제약없이 이루어질 수 있는 개방적 공공공간이 시민 간 접촉과 상호작용의 기회를 제공하고, 이러한 경험이 신뢰의 축적을 통해 행복과 간접적으로 연결될 수 있음을 시사한다. 이러한 분석 결과는 공공공간 정책이 시설 면적의 확대에만 초점을 두기보다, 공간 유형별 개방성, 접근성, 이용 방식, 그리고 그 안에서 형성되는 사회적 관계를 함께 고려할 필요가 있음을 보여준다.

Abstract

Quality of urban life cannot be explained solely by housing and mobility; it is also shaped by the spaces citizens share and the social relations formed within them. In the context of deepening urbanization and individualization, public spaces are increasingly recognized as social infrastructure that facilitates repeated encounters, interaction, and community trust. Against this background, this study empirically examines the relationship between public spaces and the happiness of urban residents, focusing on the mediating role of trust.

This study uses data from the 2017 Seoul Survey to measure per capita public space in Seoul by park area, library area, and public sports facility area. The results show that park area per capita is significantly and positively associated with happiness, and that a partial mediating effect of trust is observed only in this relationship. This suggests that open public spaces, where everyday activities such as walking, resting, and leisure can occur with relatively few restrictions, may foster social contact and trust, thereby indirectly contributing to happiness.

These findings suggest that public space policy should move beyond the quantitative expansion of facilities and consider design features such as openness, accessibility, usage patterns, and social relations associated with different types of public spaces.
